Solid copper bottles are made entirely of pure copper, while copper-plated bottles are just a thin copper layer over a cheaper base metal, usually nickel or steel. The difference matters a lot. Plated bottles are less durable, do not deliver the full benefits of copper, and can expose the metal underneath as the plating wears. For a copper water bottle, solid pure copper is the only version worth buying.
Why plated copper is a problem
- The metal underneath. Copper plating is usually applied over a nickel adhesion layer. As the thin plating wears off with use, you can end up with that base metal in contact with your water. Nickel in particular is not something you want touching your drinking water.
- It does not last. A thin plated layer is not lifetime quality. Solid, heavy-gauge copper is built to last a lifetime.
- It loses the benefits. The benefits of a copper vessel come from real, solid copper interacting with the water. A worn or thin plated layer cannot deliver the same effect.
How to spot the difference
