You can tell a copper water bottle is real by four quick checks: it is not magnetic (a magnet will not stick to pure copper), the inside and outside are the same raw reddish-orange copper color with no silver metal showing, it develops natural tarnish or patina over time, and it feels solid and heavy for its size. Plated or fake bottles usually fail one or more of these tests.
The four tests
- The magnet test. Copper is not magnetic. If a magnet sticks firmly to the bottle, it is not solid copper. On real copper, a magnet slides off or, at most, drifts slowly.
- The inside-outside match. Look inside the bottle. Genuine, unlined copper has the same raw, reddish-orange color inside as outside. If the inside looks silver or shiny like steel, it is lined or plated, not solid copper.
- The tarnish test. Real, uncoated copper naturally tarnishes and develops a patina over time. This is a good sign, not a flaw. A bottle that never changes color at all may be coated or fake.
- The weight test. Solid, heavy-gauge copper feels satisfyingly heavy and solid. A very light bottle usually means thin or plated copper.
