How Long Should Water Sit in a Copper Bottle Before Drinking?

    Last updated: July 2026

There is no required time to let water sit in a copper bottle. You can drink from it right away and use it like any normal water bottle, and you will still get more benefit than from a plastic or steel bottle. If you specifically want more copper infusion, many people following traditional Ayurveda let the water sit for a few hours or overnight, but this is optional, not necessary.

The short answer: use it however you like

You do not have to let water sit at all. Simply using a copper bottle throughout your day already gives you copper's benefits and its naturally antimicrobial, self-cleaning water. If you refill and drink from it several times a day, that is completely fine and there is no special routine to follow.

If you want more copper infusion

Some people prefer to let water sit longer to infuse more copper. In traditional Ayurveda, water is often stored in a copper vessel overnight (this is the classic tamra jal practice). Others simply use the bottle normally throughout the day. Both approaches work. Letting it sit longer is usually favored by people who drink just one bottle per day and want maximum infusion, while people who refill often get their copper naturally across the day.

    A note on use

Whichever approach you choose, fill the bottle with clean water only, and avoid leaving water sitting for extremely long stretches or using very hot water.
